Trend Report - Summer 2022

  1. Door Framed Countertop

Project Credit: am residences

We have been seeing this trend non-stop in architecture forward European cabinetry. What we love about these projects are the crisp clean lines, well dimensioned spaces, natural palettes creating interest through layering textures. These projects show how you can create interest without over embellishing.

If your first thought viewing this is “won’t this damage my cabinets”, we thought the same. After replacing enough late 90’s / early 00’s thermofoil kitchens suffering water damage, we would be inclined to use this look sparingly. The front lip of the countertop rises flush with the front of the doors, creating a small barrier here.

Where we think this look could be fantastic: Powder Room, Server Buffet, Coffee Bar.

2. Old World Textures

Soft textures such as plaster, clay, and travertine are having a huge moment in interiors, especially in the kitchen. Expertly layering textures creates interest in a muted colour palette. Check out our Virginia Park Project to see our white clay textured hood box.

We LOVE this trend and think it’s a beautiful way to add character to a minimal aesthetic. Where we would apply this trend; hoods, walls, back of islands, fireplace surrounds, hallways, ceilings, nearly any indoor surface that’s not being walked on or needs to repel water. Imagine this in your wine cellar? Magical.

3. Glazed Tiles

Another trend we are fully on board with, glazed tile. If you like this look but are unsure whether to go bold or keep it neutral? Consider what is in your wardrobe. Do you feel most comfortable in a tailored charcoal suit or an LBD? Go with the neutral. If you love to wear a bold colour or print, commit to that emerald tile! Guiding with this principle in mind, I have not had one client regret their choice.

4. Bronze

An updated version of the late 00’s obsession with high sheen espresso stained cabinets, the current on trend for warm tones is a “smoked oak” style of stain in a low sheen. The diffuse look of the matte sheen allows the beauty of the wood grain to come to life. This finish pairs well with black, copper and brick tones. To keep from looking dated, avoid nickle or stainless hardware pairing.

Why we love it; oak is one of the hardest wearing materials we use in cabinetry. The incredible durability oak provides will leave you cabinetry looking like new for years to come.

5. Integrated Hardware

Is no hardware the new hardware trend? As the minimalist lovers we are, we think of it as less of a trend and more of a style. If you’re a true minimalist we know this style will make your heart sing. For a large application such as an entire kitchen we recommend tone on tone integrated hardware. If you’re looking to add some contrast you can really get creative here contrasting the front finish with metal, painted, or woodgrain finish. Does integrated have you interested?
